JERICHO - A Success Story

Hi Mark & Jean!

What a day we've had here, but I am so thankful that Jericho is probably sleeping now in his new home with Scott. Even though the vet didn't stitch Jericho up, he is on antibiotics and I cleaned his wound with peroxide and put on Neosporin and wrapped it in gauze twice today but it came off both times. He did get sick after I gave him the first antibiotic (pill), but Scott is going to continue them through tomorrow and then get him into his vet on Monday. I'm sure he'll pay whatever it takes to get him well. We were both pretty concerned earlier today that the infection in his leg could cause him to lose it, but after Mark & I gave him a bath and I treated it twice with the antibiotic salve it is looking better already and he is using it and even running after tennis balls. I did limit the ball chasing, but just the sight of them distracted any pain he had!

He is so beautiful and Scott is so amazed at how intelligent he is. He is very obedient, sits, shakes, speaks and will walk right next to him without a lead. He must have started his life out well and it's really sad to think that such a nice boy just about got put down. Anyway you can rest assured he's in a great home now. Scott has wanted a white shepherd pup for a long time, but since he was a fireman and having to work those 24 hour shifts, thought it wouldn't be fair to the new pup.

He recently resigned from the fire dept because he bought a lounge and restaurant in Logansport about 5 years ago which is doing very well and decided to give up the fire dept in November to have more time for his business and his dogs. He is single with no children but is currently dating a girl with a 10 year old boy. He's very interested in his dogs and loves to spend time and train them. Everyone that know his first Husky Alex is so amazed how well trained he is and Scott is not mean at all, just real direct and praises them for their good deeds. I am sending some pictures with a separate e-mail for you to see how big a day Jericho had. Scott said this was the best day of his life because he's finally got a white shepherd!

Well look for the pictures. They will follow and I'll talk to you both soon!

We made it home in good time. Maggie was an angel in the car. Dani took a few minutes to warm up to another dog in her territory, but in no time they were both
play bowing and taking turns chasing each other all over the yard. they had a peaceful dinner (no squabbling) and are back outside playing again. you were right, though. Dani is going to have to build upsome stamina for this little bundle of energy. Maggie
has already learned to use the doggie door. She thinks it is pretty cool. thank you for the pictures of Mark and me with Maggie. also for the beautiful flowers. mycomputer is hooked up to Mark's work computer right now, so we can't send pictures. will get them to you soon though. thank you again for giving Maggie such a loving home, and for letting us make her one of our
"pack". carolyn

yes, Maggie did a lot if pacing yesterday between play sessions. when it came time to go to sleep, though, she walked around the bedroom only a couple of times before she found the right spot. she slept on the floor for a while, then went into the crate with her fleece. both dogs wanted to go out once during the night (we close the doggie door because of wild critters from the woods) but otherwise everyone slept very well. Maggie and Dani spent the morning playing chase, tug-o-war, and drinking lots of water. after lunch they wandered around the yard together sniffing where the night time critters had been. my first piano student came at 2oclock. after meeting her, Maggie fell asleep under the piano and took a good nap. she also napped through my second student. she is now resting on the bed in my daughter's old room from where she can see down the driveway to the street (one of Dani's favorite spots in the house). she has been a very good girl and is eating well. we have an appointment to go meet the vet on wed. he is a very gentle country doctor. i'm sure she will like him. my son put the pictures Mark took into his computer last night so i could send them to you. hope you recieved them. will send more soon. carolyn

Hi Annmarie. Maggie is doing great. she passed her vet visit with flying colors. just a touch of round worms. she weighs 59 lbs, and is eating very well just like you said. she and Dani continue to refine their playing tecnique to better enjoy each other. right now thew are spending more time rolling around on the ground with each other playing "bitey face" than playing tackle football. Maggie yelped a few times while pinned under Dani after a tackle, so they seem to avoid that kind of game now. they still love tug-o-war and chase. we locked Maggie in the bedroom with us the first night where she slept on the floor and in an open crate with her fleece mat in it. now she has the run of the house at night and alternates between our room and Mindy's room where the bed is right by the window. both dogs like that spot alot and they share it well. she gets in bed with me before Dani comes in at night, but leaves when Dani jumps up to go to sleep. she knows she is welcome, though. Maggie continues to enjoy the piano students that come to "see her". she is also gaining confidence about her new surroundings every day and is staying outside with Dani for longer periods of time without having to come back in the doggie door to see where i am. she is still a little aprehensive of Mark when he first comes home from work each day, but eventually warms up to play fetch in the living room. we have been for two car rides, and both times her tail began wagging really big when we pulled back up our drive. i think she was happy to come back to the same house she had just left. yes, she is fitting in well and we love her very much. my son has been home from Virginia this week, and Maggie has become very fond of him. he works for Nextel in VA for three weeks, then works here for a week. he thinks she is the sweetest dog ever. thank you for sharing her with us. these pictures are my first effort on the digital. will take some more this weekend and pass them along. c

hi AnnMarie. Maggie is settling in fine. she is gradually getting used to all the people that come and go here, and is barking less at the doorbell. she and Dani are in a playing lull, as Dani has an absess in her mouth and is not wanting to roughhouse. probably just a splinter from a stick she was chewing on. she's been on antibiotics and remyidyl since monday, but still seems to be sore. back to the vet tomorrow for a closer look. so in the mean time Maggie is playing lots of fetch with me and Mark, and lots of "chase the deer around the fence line". i go outside the fence and feed ther deer every morning, and Maggie plays like she is herding them from one side of the yard to the other. of course, the deer are so used to dogs that they just munch their breakfast while watching Maggie run hither and tither around the yard. Maggie thinks she is doing a great job of keeping the deer on the other side of the fence, though, so she gets lots of praise from me. i do hope you can come by and visit on one of your journeys. just let us know. carolyn

UPDATE 11/12/03

hi there! yes, we are still here. have been so busy i can hardly see straight. Maggie is great, though. she and Dani are such great buddies. the one thing i insist upon taking time for several times a week is our morning jogs. keeps all three of us (Maggie, Dani and me) in good mental health. the order from Cafe Press came in a timely manner. everything was just right except one shirt. i think i might have ordered a child's size by mistake. it is on my list of things to do. the calendar is beautiful! will put one up by my desk at the barn. i bet you have been tremendously busy lately too. do you have any new fosters? hope all of your own babies are well. thank you for the invitation to the picnic in schertz. unfortunately, our annual neighborhood garage sale was that day and i was already obligated to help. Maggie's 2nd birthday is november 25th. she and Dani will get lots of extra treats, rawhides, cheese bones and cool doggie stuff just like they did for Dani's 3rd birthday oct. 31st. Maggie still believes it is her job to keep the deer out of the back yard every morning. she works so hard, running along the fence from one side of the yard to the other. she comes over to me every now and then to get confirmation that she is doing a good job. i praise her hardily for the work she's doing, then she's right back at it. Dani helps a little at first, but does not have the drive to see the job through like Maggie does! Maggie has had one emergency trip to the vet since we've had her. i feed the 13 horses at the barn every friday night, and i started taking Maggie and Dani alternately with me. Dani has been many times and knows the routine. i wanted Maggie to go with me alone several times so i cound focus on her and teach her how to behave around the horses. the first few times Maggie and i went, she was respectful of the horses' size and space. then one night she decided that she should help me heard them into their stalls. i hollered at her just as she came up behind the dominant gelding and nipped him on the ankle. he kicked her on the side of the head and they both took off running in opposite directions. poor baby, she yelped and came running over to me cowering. i was so sfraid that she had been badly hurt. i left the horses where they were, jumped in my van and called the vet. he lives three minutes from the barn and we were there with him in no time. bottom line, Maggie was not seriously hurt. no scratches on the eyeball, just a little swelling for a few days. she and i went back to the barn the following friday. she gave the horses a wide berth, and has done so ever since. i take both dogs with me now and they are both very well behaved, staying well out of the way, but where i can see them. No, Maggie does not play the piano yet but she sure does like to listen to it. she falls asleep as soon as my students begin to play! we are all enjoying thanksgiving and Christmas music now. my favorite time of year. you can't believe how many variations there are on jingle bells! will try to keep in better touch. carolyn

I'm a HERO!!!
Note from Gunder's new mom.....

Donna,

You can pass this on to Kathryn if you feel that she would want to know this, but I had something happen to me last night that I have NEVER had happen:

About 4:00 A.M. A very, very drunk man entered my home. He was confused, and probably harmless, however I will never know. Gunder lept out of bed and was barking his head off. When I entered the living room the man was stumbling down my porch steps and my front door was swinging wide open (I had not locked it-stupid me). I believe if Gunder had not been there, this man might have tried to come into my room. I called the police and this guy had already been arrested by the time they came to talk to me. Fortunetly, I'll never know what he wanted, but there is something to be said about fate when I think about how Gunder was almost not my dog! He literally chased the drunk man out of my house!
